Why design disasters happen?

Not everyone has mastered interior design or interior decoration and many still decorate their homes and businesses themselves — and everybody has their own mistakes which impacts the appearance of the room. The main cause for many interior design problems is the same. The design process was not well planned and as a result poorly executed. To avoid this, take some time to sit down and think about what you want to achieve with your space. What kind of feeling do you want to create? What specific elements do you want to include? Once you have a clear vision for your space, it will be much easier to bring it to life. Let’s see which are the top 5 common interior design mistakes people make when decorating their spaces and how to avoid them.

When you don’t remember to measure

It’s simple and will be avoided by all means. As an Interior decorator, I often find that this is the #1 interior design mistake people make. In their excitement to move into a new office or new home, they jump online or start visiting stores and start buying furniture without even measuring the spaces they have available. As a result, they end up with furniture that is too large or too small for the space, and it throws off the entire look of the room. So before you start buying anything, measure your space and make sure you know what will fit.

You must measure the rooms you wish to decorate and then check the dimensions of the furniture to make sure everything fits. There is nothing worse for a person than being in love with furniture that is either too large or too small. You need to take into account the size of the room, the placement of the furniture, and traffic flow when selecting pieces for your home. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a cramped and cluttered space. Bring a tape measure, use an app or laser measuring device to get these measurements done! The furniture store managers can tell you stories of how many times they have been asked to take back sofas and other pieces because they did not fit in the customer’s space. So take your time to measure before you buy.

Following fads or latest trends

In a similar vein, this another mistake people make, buying furniture that doesn’t fit the style. Interior trends evolve according to the demands we have as human beings today and represent our comforts in everyday life and in the years to come. Just because you saw a trendy couch in a store doesn’t mean it’s going to look good in your living room. So before you buy anything, think about how it will fit into your home and whether or not it will be practical for your needs. Will the purple bling couch that was trendy & chic, albeit a touch uncomfortable, you purchased today still make you as happy in the next 18-24 months or will you end up with buyer’s remorse? If you’re not sure, it’s probably best to wait it out and see if the trend sticks around and if the same piece of furniture hold its appeal once you have had a chance to look & think over a few other options.

Falling into the trap of matching furniture sets

Of course it’s okay for us to want our space looking good. Fear of lack of cohesive designs makes people fall in the trap of buying matching furniture everywhere. This is a design mistake that I have noticed first time home buyers make often! A cohesive design while necessary does not mean that everything has to match 100%. This is not a design principle that is necessary to make your house look good. In fact, it can often look dated and bland. So don’t be afraid to mix and match! Use different colors, patterns, and textures to create an interesting and unique space that reflects your personal style. It will make your home or business feel more personalized & give it a unique character, one that not only you but everyone visiting your space will love & adore!

Bad lighting = Bad decor

Lighting is really a great first step in a home or business upgrade. Using great lighting will transform a room from drab to fab, poor lighting can wash out the beautiful finishes & make everything seem very boring. Good lighting can enhance the design of a space & make it seem more expensive than it actually is. It can also make a small space seem larger & brighter and inversely a large space feel more cozy. So take the time to assess your lighting needs & figure out what will work best in each room before you start shopping for light fixtures. Just like all spaces are not created equal neither are the lighting requirements and they vary from room to room. You don’t need to be a lighting expert to know which light will look good for your home or business.

Whenever bulbs need to be replaced people often feel intimidated or confused because they don’t really understand what all those little numbers on the packaging mean. With a little bit of knowledge & effort, you can also create the perfect ambience for your space! Once you understand the basics, the rest will fall into place. And if you get stuck, there are always professionals you can turn to for help. But don’t be afraid to take on the challenge yourself! Just follow our recommendations and you’ll be fine!

For living rooms & bedrooms, we recommend a light bulb with a warm color temperature (2700K-3000K). For kitchens & bathrooms, we recommend a light bulb with a cool color temperature (3500K-4000K). For accent lighting & task lighting, we recommend a light bulb with a high color temperature (5000K+). For commercial spaces we recommend a light bulb with a cool colour temperature of 6500K+ for the common areas like reception, storage & restrooms. For the office rooms we recommend a light bulb with a cool colour temperature used for task or accent lighting for when you are working & an option of a dimmer switch or warm lights like you would in your living room, when you want to start unwinding at the end of the work day, so your eyes can take a break from the glaring blue light of the screens. So next time you head to the store for a light bulb, keep these numbers in mind for an easier shopping experience or refer back to this blog as a handy guide!
